Frostblood, written by Elly Blake, is a wonderful fantasy novel about Ruby, one of the last remaining firebloods. She is a teenage girl who lives in a world where some people have powers of frost and fire. The world she lives in is currently being controlled by an evil frost king, King Rasmus. His power is incredibly strong which is a large part of what helped him gain and maintain power. Because the world she lives in is controlled by frost, she is forced to hide her powers. Very quickly, that plan fails and she has to learn how to survive. To do this, she must strengthen her fire and defeat King Rasmus. This story takes us through Ruby’s attempts at both learning and surviving and through the relationships she makes on the way.

I genuinely enjoyed this book. There were multiple characters that were very easy to like and root for. The plot of the story was interesting throughout the entire novel, and there weren’t moments that weren’t important. Because there was never a dull moment, it was a fast paced book that I wasn’t able to put it down. The mix of fantasy, action and romance all tied together really well. Plus, this story doesn’t end immediately. There are two sequels, Fireblood and Nightblood. I would also highly recommend reading both of the other books in the trilogy. The entire series is a great read for teens.

Nightblood by Elly Blake

The novel Nightblood by Elly Blake is the final book in the Frostblood and Fireblood  trilogy. Ruby finds out that herwhiler her mother was pregnant she was possessed by the Minax while Ruby grew in her womb. This leads to the creation of a new race called the Nightbloods and Ruby is the first. She is already holding the Fire Minax, and is tempted to let the Minax take control of her to make her pain ease and to not feel any emotions. Arcus, Kai, and Ruby have to stop Eurus from getting to the Gate of Light, but first they need to rescue their friends, who he has kidnapped. There are a lot of terrifying parts with a lot of plot twists which really add to the story but there is a beautiful ending which makes it all better.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves fiction with the drama of saving the world and still having that romantic part of the story. It really does have a good combination of good guy and bad guy, with an impact that lasts for days and the enchanting chapters that makes you want to continue reading. This series is perfect for those who like Victoria Aveyard’s Red Queen. I really hope you enjoy this book the way I have!

Fireblood by Elly Blake

The novel Fireblood by Elly Blake is the sequel to the novel Frostblood. Last time we left off at the part where Ruby survived or didn’t and whether she was able to defeat King Rasmus and melt the controlling frost throne.  If you, and I hope you did, read Frostblood then you know Ruby did melt the throne, though unfortunately the frost Minax didn’t die with it. Instead it has been inhabiting people, including Ruby. We also found ou, the late King Rasmus was the younger brother to Arcus, making him King Arelius Arkanus. Now, in the frosty court of Temptasia, Ruby feels uncomfortable around the many nobles who seem to have a great grudge against her just because she is a Fireblood. Arcus keeps on trying to get Ruby to be accepted, as she is his lover and the court has to be accepting of this arrangement. Meanwhile, Brother Thistle is in the library trying to find more information about the Minax and how to destroy it.

As the novel continues, you will find some interesting turns of events. There is so much passion and love, the embracing of a weapon that is also art, and the struggle of accepting the truth. There are some significant plot twists that will definitely shock you as it shocked me. I enjoyed reading this series very much and wanted to continue on to see what would happen next in the novel Nightblood. There is some complex language used, and even some that I had to look up; I am excited to say that I did expand my vocabulary from just reading this one novel!

Frostblood by Elly Blake

The novel, Frostblood by Elly Blake takes place in an environment full of hate. The cruel Frostblood leader has been torturing and killing most of the Firebloods. He even kept some and made them fight for their lives against strong and healthy Frostbloods while the Firebloods were weak and malnourished. Ruby is a seventeen year old girl who is a Fireblood. She has concealed her powers most of her life in fear of getting caught.. Ruby wants to practice her powers and control them so she can keep her mother and herself safe. One day, Ruby sneaks out of their little hut to the forests so she can practice her powers. Instead, she sees soldiers coming. Her mother tries to stop the soldiers from taking Ruby away, but is useless and Ruby is sent to a prison. While she is in prison two men, Arcus and Brother Thistle, both Frostbloods. offer her freedom if she completes a task, and she agrees. The men take her to the abbey, where she receives treatment and learns how to control her powers with a Frostblood master as there are no Fireblood masters left. Once she is trained and it is almost time to leave, the abbey is compromised and she is taken to the castle to prove her worth as a fighter in the arena against Frostbloods.

I really enjoyed this magical book. I loved the romance and the action parts with the fantasy; this has to be my favorite combination. Even during the most difficult moments of the book, there was always some sort of hope. Then again there are moments in the book with some steamy scenes. It’s so cute and light at the end, which was needed because a lot of devastation did happen throughout the book.
